It seems unreal to me that my “baby” just turned 15. Seriously. Where did the time go? It’s even more hard to believe that while she’s growing up in the blink of an eye, I, on the other hand, am holding steady at 29…year after year. Don’t know how I do it! {wink, wink}! For those of you that are moms with teenagers, you can relate when I say that whatever “mom” thinks is a great idea, the teenager will automatically want the opposite. It’s just the way it goes during a certain stage of teenhood. So, needless to say, while I was full of grand, fabulous ideas for my daughter’s birthday cake, she wanted nothing to do with any of them. (Although, in the end, I still kind of got my way). 🙂 Here’s what she ended up with:
Simple and cute, complete with lime green and pink polka dots as requested by the birthday girl.
I did, however, sprinkle a little touch of “mom” into the cake. (I couldn’t resist)!
So, I added the fun little banner…
…and added the requested colors to each layer of the cake, so that when it was cut, it looked like this:
Fun, right?
Originally, I wanted to do a tall cake, with two layers of each color.
In the end, though, it was too tall and didn’t look great.
This is the part of the story where I got my way.
I reallllly wanted to make a ruffle cake for her birthday, but she wanted no parts of it. Too “childish” for her.
But, since I had three extra layers of cake lying around…
…I got to make it anyway!
I’ve been dying to make this cake since the first time I saw it on Amy Atlas’ blog.
I was pretty pleased with the way it turned out, considering that I’d never used that cake tip before.
I do think that next time I’ll try to make my buttercream a little creamier so that it “ruffles” better. My batch was a little stiff.
Nonetheless, not bad for my first try!
And of course, it, too, had all of the pretty colors inside.
It was yummy, too!
And the birthday girl was happy and smiling…which always does a momma’s heart good! 🙂
Happy Celebrating!
Jen
